People from ASEAN countries can now travel to any country in the region for one month without visas, except for Myanmar, said Malaysia’s Immigration Director-General Mahmood Adam on November 5. The announcement came following a meeting of ASEAN immigration and consular officials held in Kuala Lumpur on November 4. “Previously, tourists from ASEAN countries were only allowed to travel not more than 17 or 18 days without visas,” the director general said, adding that the extension was aimed at making travel in the region easier and encouraging tourists to stay longer. He said ways to increase the functions and concepts of ASEAN passports have also been discussed to set up standards of member countries’ passports as this will help in identifying genuine passports from fakes.
